After 1,098 victories, 18 Final Fours, 8 national titles and 16 SEC tournament titles Pat Summitt steps down as head coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols women’s basketball coach. What does this mean to Tennessee women’s college basketball program? Who will fill Coach Summitt’s shoes; will this be the end of a great program? Only time will tell. After 38 years Pat Summitt was the brand for Tennessee women basketball. As the old saying goes you never know what a great thing you have until it’s gone. Sadly, Tennessee basketball program, and its university, will experience this first hand.
Even with battling ‘early-onset Alzheimer, Summitt continued to coach, and the Lady Vols completed another great season and a berth in the NCAA Elite Eight. No wonder why she has been name National coach of the year seven times! Its Summitt’s willpower and passion for coaching that sets her aside from others.
In a statement to the university Summitt stated “I’ve loved being the head coach at Tennessee for 38 years, but I recognize that the time has come to move into the future and to step into a new role” during a recent interview. As a result it will be hard not to think Tennessee’s women’s basketball without thinking about Patt Summitt. Even though she won’t be on the sideline leading the Lady Vols, her impact as a leader will continue to be a force at Tennessee and women’s sports across the world of college athletics. She’s a true pioneer for women’s college sports and will be truly missed by Lady Vols fans and more.
